  • Abstract:
The objectives of this dissertation are to assess the current and potential role of medium to small size E/C firms in international business, to examine their strategic management techniques, and finally to examine the barriers and vision of the firms toward internationalization. The investigation defines the characteristics of the E/C firms relying on organization theory, the theory of international trade and strategic management theory. A descriptive study was conducted on a sample of 62 U. S. E/C medium to small size firms located in the northeast region specialized in the design and construction of infrastructure projects. The focus of the survey was on corporate management strategies, contract management practices, barriers to entry and corporate vision as it relates to international business. An additional component to the existing model of the E/C firm is recommended, i.e. , International Development System, that will encompass many considerations whether at the planning or implementation stages. The dynamics available through this model will continuously update and support the firms whether through a physical cluster or a virtual cluster (the organizational web) or both. To be successful, E/C firms need to be dynamic, aggressively change-embracing and growth oriented. This agility of firms demand agile individuals who understand the potential for future customers, future markets and proactively anticipate customer requirements. Such an understanding leads to strategic plans to acquire new competencies and open new markets.
